Remote Backup Software
What is remote backup software?
Remote backup Software indicates a certain type of (internet) back-up based on the
functionality of ability to take backup from a remote location.
Online backup software, managed backup software also usually denote the same - remote backup software.
Remote backup can be achieved by dedicated software and data ceneters as in large corporations or
through service providers who provide the service on an ongoing basis.
Offsite backup is also usually a kind of remote backup but not necessarily so. Offsite backup is taken for the
purpose of disaster recovery and it can actually involve taking a backup on tapes or disks and then physically
carrying them to a different location. In a different setup, offsite backup can be achieved directly through remote
backup software situated in a different location.
Features of remote backup software
- Scheduling feature: The backup can be scheduled for a regular frequency like daily or weekly and the
software automatically performs the operation at the designated time.
- Data compression and encryption: Data compression is done to reduce the size of the backup data and
encryption is done to safely transmit the data over the network.
- Data transfer: This is also an integral feature of the remote backup software. Data transfer can be done
over a local area network or over the internet depending up on the specific setup.
- Multiplatform support: This is another feature to look for especially if data involves a large network of
computers with different operating systems like windows, Linux, mac etc. In this case, the remote backup
software product will have interfaces to interact with various operating systems and organize all
data backup and recovery smoothly.
- Ease of recovery of data: In remote backup software, data is generally organized by date, file names
and location of backup and users will have the option to select required recovery options.
- Working file backup: This is the ability to take a backup even when files are open, and users on working on
them. Typically mail documents(exchange, outlook files) and other dynamic data in various applications falls
into this category. This is a useful feature because it may not be possible to close all the applications
before taking a backup.
